Animals imprisoned inside LAAS "shelters" by Ed Boks are now being placed where they can't even be seen by the public! Listen to what happened recently to one wonderful dog.
Peter Wallerstein - who usually rescues marine mammals - heroically pulled a dog from the ocean. The dog had been rescued from a Texas pound about two months earlier and was traveling with his new guardian when something spooked him and he bolted on the Venice Boardwalk. He slipped out of his collar and took off.
His human companion couldn't catch him, and the dog was lost. Unbeknownst to his guardian, he would end up literally in the ocean - and that's when Peter performed a heroic rescue and circulated the info via email.
Animal Control took the dog to the West L.A. shelter. The guardian had been checking every shelter and rescue group daily; but when he went to the West LA shelter looking for his dog, not ONE employee told him about the dogs hidden in isolation that the public are not allowed to see. Why were they keeping his lost dog hidden in isolation? Because LAAS deemed his dog "dangerous" and therefore did not place him where anyone could see him - not even people looking for lost animals! How utterly egregious is that?! Not only is this in VIOLATION of the Hayden law, but it's an evil policy going on under Ed Boks' reign of terror.
A local volunteer who was called daily by the desperate guardian, went to the West LA shelter herself, and persisted in describing the dog and not taking no for an answer. She finally found out that the dog was indeed at the West LA Shelter, but she was told by staff that she could not see the dog as he was judged "aggressive" and had been placed in isolation.
(One LAAS Commissioner confirmed that a policy was enacted years ago mandating that animals in isolation be shown to guardians looking for lost pets; and in fact they should legally be shown to anyone looking to adopt, since the dogs in isolation have a right to be shown to the public as per the Hayden law. This mandate is obviously NOT being followed. Because this same situation has occurred multiple times and Ed Boks has failed miserably to resolve this problem, the same LAAS commissioner requested that windows be placed in the doors of the isolation unit so missing dogs could at least be "partially" seen by the public; this was REJECTED!)
Had this volunteer not persisted, the dog would have been killed - even though he had an absolutely loving guardian worried sick and frantically trying to find him. Luckily, the story had a happy ending with the reunion of dog and guardian - but if the volunteer hadn't persisted, the dog would now be ground up into fertilizer or pet food at D & D disposal.
This is what's goes on inside LAAS with Ed Boks at the helm and earning over one hundred sixty five thousand dollar per year of YOUR hard earned tax dollars.
We will never back down until Ed Boks is GONE and someone who understands how to implement Winograd's "No Kill Equation" is in charge. Animal activists are NOT going away; we're just getting started!
Ed Boks is going to have to go, and after he's gone from our city, LA can truly move along the path towards NO KILL.
